The joy-con is among the more recent controllers, being released in 2017 along with the Switch. There are a wide variety of colors and designs. As well as uses and capabilities.
Pros:
- Versatile.
- Portable
- Easy-to-use
They have many different ways to be used. For example, you can use two vertically, in both hands, or flip one horizontally and use it like that (as shown in picture below)
They also have motion tracking for games like Just Dance or the new Nintendo Sports coming out very soon. They are small and fit in just about everyone’s hands. This feature makes it possible to tote around the whole console and controllers. However, if you do need to keep your own switch home, carrying just your controllers is a valid choice. Joy-cons can connect to any other Switch. And through Bluetooth, they can also connect to other devices, such as laptops.
Cons:
- Drift Issue
- Short-term
- Expensive
With prices still in the $60 – $80 range, getting name brand Joy-cons can be a rather hefty sum of money. Their small size also makes them fragile compared to other console controllers. The unique design has also resulted in a chronic drift problem. Nearly all joy-cons develop drift issue where one of the analog sticks will continuously register one direction. Nintendo has addressed this problem, but it seems they were only able to reduce it.
Rating: 7/10
Overall, they are good controllers. The drift issue puts a serious dent in their rating, but if it’s fixed they are fun and easy to use
